How to Zap Unwanted Facial and Body Hair with Laser Hair Removal
Hair can be a wonderful thing on the head, but elsewhere, it can be a menace. Often times we have to painfully pluck, woefully wax, or shave our way to smooth skin. And we have to do it over and over again.
Laser hair removal is a more permanent solution to our fight with unruly hair on places like the chin, back, bikini area, underarm/armpit or legs. But there is a lot to know before deciding to go down that path, and we want to answer your questions.
What is laser hair removal and how does it work?
Laser hair removal is an outpatient procedure that works by targeting hair follicles below the surface. The heat gets to the root of the follicle and stops its growth. The reason we have to keep shaving and plucking is because we are only reaching the surface with these methods. Laser hair removal will eventually stop the hair from growing all together.
It is a relatively comfortable procedure, especially when treating small areas at a time. On average, it can take 6 treatments to completely remove the unwanted hair, and treatments are given 4-8 weeks apart. This is because each individual hair follicle is not in the same growth cycle at the same time.
What type of laser hair removal do we offer at the clinic?
We use a Dual Wave Candela, or “true laser.” This laser uses a single wavelength of light that can precisely target each hair follicle. The laser can be adjusted to accommodate your specific skin color to ensure results and safety.
Some clinics use Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) for hair removal, but this does not produce even results. The light cannot penetrate deep enough to eradicate hair follicles. For more information on the difference between IPL and laser technology, check out this blog. We will cover the uses and benefits of IPL treatments for skin rejuvenation in a future post.
Any considerations before giving it a go?
- Consult a qualified professional before deciding if laser hair removal is right for you.
- The number of treatments will vary depending on growth stage of hair follicles and the size of area to be treated.
- True laser is safe for any skin color.
- Opt for treating small areas at each session to reduce pain and downtime after treatments.
- True laser is far more effective for hair removal than IPL.
Just imagine the time you can save by eliminating unwanted hair with laser hair removal. And in the hands of a professional, it is a safe and relatively low-pain way to remove unwanted hair.
