What’s the Point of Microneedling Treatment? Firmer, Smoother Skin, That’s What

Microneedling treatment

Needles don’t have to be scary. In fact, they can be downright helpful. Microneedling treatment, also referred to as skin needling, collagen induction therapy (CIT) and percutaneous collagen induction (PCI), is a minimally invasive procedure that uses a handheld device with incredibly fine needles to rejuvenate skin. The device’s needles microscopically puncture the skin surface, creating a controlled skin injury. Amazingly, this creates the opportunity for your body to produce more collagen and elastin to fill in the puncture wounds, which improves skin firmness and texture. Got acne or scars? This treatment creates drastic improvements in these and many other skin conditions.

According to Dr. Mitchell Schwartz, a dermatologic surgeon in Vermont, microneedling treatment, when done by an experienced professional and in combination with specialized skincare products, can be more effective than laser or Fraxel treatments. “Compared to fractionated laser treatments, microneedling not only spares the epidermis (the outer layer of the skin), it strengthens it,” he says. “The key to microneedling is the healing response that this process stimulates. The result is thicker, healthier looking skin.” It’s also less expensive, which is a big plus for the pocketbook.

Fun Fact: Microneedling uses methods inspired by acupuncture and tattoo guns.

The Procedure

Microneedling treatment is a safe, chemical-free beauty enhancer for any skin tone and condition. For this treatment, we use a handheld device. The tip of the pen-like device houses 12 superfine gauge surgical steel disposable needles. These needles work in a very quick, vertical fashion, which lessens recovery time. There’s nothing better than looking and feeling better as fast as possible, right?

Each treatment takes about 90 minutes, and has very little downtime. While each person responds differently to treatment, skin normally remains pink for about 24 hours after the procedure, with some peeling for a few days. We always offer a numbing cream to make you more comfortable, and give skin cream recommendations and proper skin care advice.

Between 3-5 microneedling treatments is typically recommended for best results. If you have deeper scarring, we may combine microneedling with laser treatments to get smooth, healthy skin. Add a few maintenance treatments each year, and your skin will remain in tip-top shape.

The Results

Clients often tell us they start receiving compliments after just a couple treatments. And the great thing is that microneedling makes it easier than laser treatments to treat hard-to-reach areas, like those pesky fine wrinkles under the eyes. Besides acne and scars, we can treat multitudes of skin concerns with this procedure, such as large pores, stretch marks, rosacea, and sagging skin.
