Beat dry winter skin with these 6 tips

Our skin takes a beating during the winter months. Wondering how to beat dry winter skin?

Winter is almost upon us, and we all know that itchy, dry feeling that creeps across our skin as soon as the temperatures drop. To top it off, as we get older, our skin produces less moisture, exacerbating the problem.

Your skin needs some TLC during the colder months, so here’s a few tips to keep the moisture coming.

Tip #1: Use a high-quality moisturizer, and use it often to maintain proper moisture. Obagi Hydrate and Hydrate Lux, and KèraPhine are excellent moisturizers that keeps skin hydrated and ageless.

Tip #2: Use antioxidants (Obagi Professional-C Serums with Vitamin C, Vitamin E) and sunscreen. Yes, even in the winter. In fact, it is even more important because the sun’s rays are still going strong, and they reflect off of the powdery snow. Overexposure to the sun can add up to wrinkled, damaged skin. We like Obagi Sun Shield with Zinc Oxide.

Tip #3: This is the most simple way to beat dry winter skin: don’t take long, hot showers! Yes, this feels luxurious, but it’s not doing your skin any favors. Hot water can actually dry out your skin even more! Opt for a warm shower instead, and try to keep it short. After your shower, smooth your body with MSM cream like Nature’s Plus Glucosamine Chondroitin MSM Ultra Rx-Joint Cream. MSM and glucosamine not only moisturize our skin, but they hold collagen fibers together like small bridges. MSM also enhances tissue pliability and encourages the repair of damaged skin.

Tip #4: Use mild cleansers, such as Obagi Nu-Derm Gentle Cleanser for normal/dry skin or Foaming Gel for oily skin. Look for unscented versions without triclosan or parabens. It’s a good idea to wear gloves when cleaning or doing the dishes, and warm winter gloves when outside to deter dry, cracked skin.

Tip #5: Use a humidifier – this will help seal moisture in the air. It’s also a good idea to close the bathroom door when you shower.

Tip #6: Stay hydrated and eat plenty of veggies. According to the Mayo Clinic, daily water intake needs will vary from person to person, but a general guideline to follow is:

  • Women: 2.7 liters (91 ounces) daily
  • Men: 3.7 liters (125 ounces) daily

Try to eat from the rainbow daily by consuming veggies of all colors. You will get a good amount of water from them, too! Also, a good evening primrose oil supplement will keep your skin hydrated and supple.

If you do not find relief with these tips, or if the dryness worsens or is accompanied by a rash, seek out a dermatologist.
