Laser Hair Removal
Remove or reduce unwanted hair
Looking for a great solution to the excess hair on your face or body? Laser hair removal is a relatively painless procedure to remove unwanted hair for good.
Melanin is a natural pigment found in certain cells of our body that is responsible for giving our hair, eyes and skin color. The more melanin produced by your body, the darker your hair, skin or eyes will be. Laser hair removal relies on the melanin in your hair absorbing light. Since light is energy, any absorbed light creates heat.
The goal is to get the pigment (melanin) in the hair to absorb enough light to create enough heat to permanently damage the hair follicle, without damaging surrounding skin. Doctors and scientists have discovered that by using a specific wavelength of light and properly cooling the epidermis (outer most layer of skin), the melanin in the hair will absorb most of the energy. This creates enough heat to destroy the hair follicle.
What Does Laser Hair Removal Improve?
Laser hair removal treatments eliminate unwanted hair in areas such as:
- Bikini line/Brazilian
- Upper lip
Please note: Our services include Dual Wave Candela (“true laser”) and Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) laser hair removal; true laser produces more effective results. If you are considering IPL versus Laser Hair Removal treatments and want to learn more about the differences between the two, get in touch with us and we’ll help you decide, or read this helpful blog post, What is the Difference Between IPL and Laser Hair Removal?, on The Private Clinic’s website .
What Can I Expect During Treatment?
It all starts with a consultation with one of our trained professionals. Then, if necessary, a numbing cream is applied to the area to minimize discomfort. Most people find the pain to be minimal, like a slight stinging sensation. Each treatment takes only minutes and you are out the door.
To be effective, it may take multiple treatments to get rid of the hair in a particular area. Hair goes through three phases, anagen (active growth), catagen (resting phase) and telogen (shedding phase). Using heat to destroy the hair only works when the hair follicle is in the anagen or growth phase, and it is near impossible to determine what phase of growth the hair is in during treatment. Hair follicles are in different phases at different times. Because of this, treatments are generally scheduled 4-8 weeks apart depending on the targeted location to allow hair follicles to enter the anagen phase.
What Can I Expect After Treatment?
After treatment, the area may appear red or swollen, but will quickly heal. Several days after treatment, it will appear as if there is regrowth in the treatment area. But your body is actually in the process of shedding the hair.
Since hair growth varies between follicles and different body areas, patients can expect hair removal to take approximately 6 treatments, although it may take more or less. One of the main factors that contribute to the success of laser hair removal is skin color. Because the melanin in your skin competes for the light energy being delivered by the laser, different wave lengths are used for different skin colors.
