PRP hair loss treatments for hair restoration

Introducing PRP hair loss treatments, a game-changer for individuals affected by alopecia and other types of hair loss.

Hair can be a tangled mess to deal with. Too much hair in places we don’t want it and not enough where we do. While we can help you with both of those issues at our medispa, this post focuses on the “not enough” part – alopecia, or hair loss on the scalp. In fact, according to Statistic Brain, 35 million men and 21 million women in the U.S. experience hair loss in their lifetime.

Whether you have bald spots or a receding hairline, Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) treatments – derived from your own blood – can help stimulate hair regrowth. PRP treatment activates the proliferative phase of the hair, giving rise to the future follicular unit: a prolonged anagen phase and shorter telogen phase. In another words, PRP keeps hair alive longer before it dies and shortens the sleeping phase for new hair.

PRP hair loss treatments for individuals with alopeciaIn this study, 11 male patients suffering from hair loss were given four PRP hair loss treatments (spaced out every two weeks). Hair follicle count increased from 71 follicles before treatment to 93 after treatment. Researchers also conducted a hair pull test and found that nine of the patients went from an average of 10 hairs easily pulled out before treatment to only three hairs after treatment.  Many other studies support this research.

So, what do PRP hair loss treatments look like? Your blood is drawn and put into a centrifuge; during the first spin, red blood is separated from the plasma and during the second spin, the platelets in your plasma become more concentrated. The best concentration of PRP for hair restoration is 4-6 folds. Platelets contain growth factors, which help tissues regenerate and multiply – because of this, PRP helps wounds heal faster, which led to the discovery that it also helps with hair loss. The concentrated platelets are drawn back into a syringe and reinjected into your body using syringes with very small needles (mesotherapy) and microneedling (we use Dermapen). The treatment takes about 10-15 minutes for centrifugation and 15-30 minutes for injections and Dermapen. To see the process in action, check out this video.

At Luminous You, we use a very specific “no burn protocol” to ensure minimal discomfort and maximum results. We use very thin needles (30-31 G) and strategically inject platelets into the affected areas on your scalp, exactly where you need it most. We also use a specialized centrifuge called Emcyte, one of most advanced centrifuges, to keep the concentration of PRP just right – the Mayo Clinic uses Emcyte as well.  Most regular laboratory centrifuges are unable to achieve this platelet concentration. We also use a special anticoagulant and technique to keep a PH very close to our body’s PH. This technique prevents a burning sensation during injection.

There is very little downtime; in fact, you can even take a warm shower the same evening as a treatment. It is best to avoid harsh chemicals or dyes for at least 48 hours. And the best part? While each person is different, you will see results after just a few treatments. PRP hair loss treatments are a relatively painless and cost effective (hair transplantation will cost you $7000-$12,000!) way to reduce hair loss and get it growing again.

In closing, here are some additional tips to help with management of telogen effluvium (hair loss on the scalp caused by stress): Try a high-protein diet, iron supplements, exclusion of drugs which induce catagen-like (the stage that signals the end of the active growth of a hair) beta-blockers, retinoids, anticoagulants, diagnosis and treatment of catagen-inducing endocrine disorders (thyroid dysfunction, hyperandrogenism, or hyperprolactinemia).
